Institute Profile
The University of Sussex is situated on a modern
campus, set in acres of leafy parkland, on the
edge of the South Downs. It is a medium-sized
campus, small enough to be friendly and welcoming,
but large enough to offer a lively social life
and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
The seaside city of Brighton is only a few minutes
away.
Impressively, the University pioneered the model
of school-based teacher training, which has now
been adopted by all training institutions in England.
Local schools have joined the University to form
the Sussex Consortium for Teacher Education and
Research and are equal partners in training teachers.
The result of this long-established relationship
is that the trainees receive excellent support,
both from their placement schools and from the
experienced teachers or 'mentors', who have volunteered
to train new teachers and provide models of good
practice.
About the Course
The course prepares you to teach two languages,
usually French to GCSE and A Level, or French
to GCSE and another European language to A Level.
The University of Sussex Language Institute provides
an excellent high-tech resource in order to develop
linguistic skills and confidence, with special
attention paid to the second foreign language.
We also offer you the possibility of continuing
your development at the Goethe Institute in Germany,
at the end of the PGCE.
The course provides essential training in teaching
grammar in a meaningful context. Components include
the National Curriculum, creative methods for
teaching GCSE and AS/A Level, assessment and differentiated
group work. We also explore the use of drama,
music, games and ICT to make language teaching
fun and accessible to a wide ability range.
