About the Course
The PGCE at Leeds is a course based on the partnership
between the University and schools. It integrates
university-based study with extended practical
teaching experience and training in two different
schools. These complementary experiences are designed
to enable the development of the key competencies
of classroom teaching in both a theoretical and
practical context. Throughout the course, these
following competencies are assessed against the
National Teaching Standards for Qualified Teacher
Status (QTS). Professional Values and Practice;
Knowledge and Understanding; Planning, Expectations
and Targets; Teaching Strategies; Monitoring and
Assessment; Class Management and Inclusion.
The training will provide the skills and experience
needed to teach biology to 11-18 year olds. The
opportunity will be given to teach at two different
schools. Many of the partnership schools are comprehensives,
but Leeds is also able to offer placements within
an independent school or an FE college.
As successful applicants will be trained as a
science teacher who specialises in Biology, trainees
also take complementary courses in Physics and
Chemistry that are tailored to meet individual
needs. Designed to develop both subject knowledge
and teaching techniques, these courses are taught
by specialist tutors who employ a range of methods
and who often have a national reputation.
The PGCE course is assessed entirely through coursework.
There are no formal examinations to sit. Both
formative and summative assessment
is directed to supporting your development as
a teacher towards meeting the National Teaching
Standards requirements for QTS.
Practical teaching will be assessed by mentors
in our schools and by university tutors who will
visit during block school placements to provide
advice and support on both practical teaching
and other aspects of your work.
You will also have to complete a number of essays
and projects concerned with the preparation of
teaching materials, the methodology which underpins
practical teaching, and with the analysis of general
educational issues.
To be awarded the PGCE you need to be successful
in achieving the Standards for practical teaching,
to reach a pass standard in all coursework assignments,
and to meet all other specified course requirements.
