Institute Profile
With nearly 11,000 students (of whom around 3,000
are postgraduates) and a thriving international
student community of some 1,700 students from
over 100 countries, Exeter is big enough to offer
all the study, sporting and social amenities that
is expected from a leading campus-based university,
but small enough to be personal and friendly.
The School of Education and Lifelong Learning
is based at the St Luke's campus, which has specialist
facilities such as a large education library and
excellent sporting and recreational facilities.
The campus is renowned for its beautiful surroundings
and for its safe and friendly atmosphere and is
ten minutes walk from the city centre.
The high standards maintained by the School of
Education and Lifelong Learning has been recognised
by recent government examiners. The TTA has recognised
the School as an 'A' provider for the PGCE Secondary
Programme with Ofsted scores second only to Oxford.
The School received a perfect score of 24 in its
last QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) inspection
of the taught graduate studies (CPD) programmes.
The School was also recognised in the 2001 government
RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) as one of the
top schools in the country for education research,
receiving a 5 rating. In addition the school has
been rated among the top ten in both the Times
Good University Guide and the Guardian University
Table for 2002.
All of these ITT programmes lead to qualifications
that carry Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Exeter
works in partnership with over 300 schools across
and beyond the South West whilst teacher training
is well established discipline at the university.
About the Course
D&T is presented as a wide-ranging human activity,
based not only on useful facts and theories but
also on developing an understanding of the nature
of human values and beliefs which affect D&T
issues, procedures, problem-formation and decision
making. Key Stage 2 addresses the full breadth
of the subject whilst Key stage 3 focuses on work
in resistant materials, control, and systems.
Key Stage 2/3 is a 36 week programme based principally
at the University in the first term, and subsequently
principally in school for the remaining two terms.
The Key Stage 2/3 programme is designed for students
who wish to teach children in the 7-14 age range.
This encompasses the KS2 (junior years) in primary
school and the KS3 (lower secondary years) in
secondary school. At KS2, the programme will prepare
you to teach the core subjects of English, Mathematics,
Science and Foundation subjects, plus a specialist
subject in either Design and Technology, English,
Mathematics, Physical Education or Science.
Assessment for the PGCE is normally done through
a range of University-based and school-based assignments.
There are no formal examinations. Students who
are awarded the PGCE by the University are also
recommended to receive Qualified Teacher Status
(QTS) from the GTC. QTS is provided subject to
successful completion of the Government's numeracy,
literacy and ICT tests. All PGCE coursework is
designed to provide and develop the necessary
knowledge, understanding and skills to achieve
QTS.
Entry Requirements
All students embarking on a PGCE programme must
have a degree, and must have GCSE or equivalent
in English and Maths. In addition, those students
taking a PGCE primary programme must also have
a GCSE or equivalent in Science. All students
are required to pass the three Qualified Teacher
Status Skills Tests in Literacy, Numeracy and
ICT before Qualified Teacher Status can be awarded.
Exeter University recommend that all PGCE applicants
have some recent experience in working with children.
Students wishing to enrol on a PGCE Key Stage
2/3 or Secondary course will need to demonstrate
a required level of subject knowledge. A typical
PGCE Secondary student will hold a degree with
a 50% relevance to the subject they wish to teach.
All applicants eligible for acceptance on to
our PGCE Programme will be invited to attend an
interview. At this interview students may be asked
to prepare a brief presentation or provide a portfolio
of work. It is also advisable that students have
knowledge of the current issues facing teaching,
specifically in the subject area for which they
have applied.
Students uncertain of whether their background
and/or experience is sufficient to qualify for
our course can contact the Initial Teacher Training
Office on 01392 264837 or e-mail: ed-ipso@exeter.ac.uk.
