About the Course
The Department of Education at the University
of Bath offers PGCE Secondary and PGCE Middle
Years courses. Both courses are 36 weeks long,
starting in mid-September and finishing at the
end of June. Of those 36 weeks 24 are spent in
school working with teachers and children.
Trainees undertaking the PGCE Middle Years course
can specialise in either Maths, English or Science
and will be required to teach in two different
schools, a Homeschool and a Complementary school,
in order to gain a broad experience of Key stage
2 and Key Stage 3 work.
Tutors from the University and Senior School Tutors
and subject mentors based in Partnership schools
carry out the course assessment for the award
of the PGCE and for recommendation for Qualified
Teacher Status (QTS). The University stresses
that it is essential that all elements of the
course must be completed successfully in order
to achieve the available qualifications.
Entry Requirements
The University of Bath requires that applicants
posses a degree awarded by a British university
or other approved university, or degree equivalent
qualifications. In addition, candidates should
normally possess GCSE grade C and above in English
language and mathematics. It is also advisable
that applicants have had some work experience
relevant to the subject the candidate wishes to
teach.
Bath express that successful applicants will have
a strong sense of responsibility and a mature
outlook. They must be committed to working with
young people and be ready to take the initiative
and work well within a team. Recent experience
working in schools and young people will be a
distinct advantage. All candidates will be selected
through an interview process.
