The sight is compelling. It's 10pm on a Saturday night and Brighton's seafront Madeira Drive is chocca with souped-up cars. The air’s filled with screaming engines and the smoke of burning tyres.

Welcome to the Brighton cruise. A high octane underground event that's just one of a score of similar cruises taking place on any given weekend throughout Britain, attracting a dedicated following who’ve given up a night’s clubbing to watch the owner of a Vauxhall Nova melt his tyres. Which begs the question, er why?

Guy 25 (Vauxhall Vectra rally car):

‘We do it because we love cars and we love to show off. Why do people drink 15 pints on a Saturday night? Because it gives them a buzz – the same reason we do this. I'm not going to burn my tyres cos they cost about £140 each, but a burnout is actually very skillful – to spin the wheels on the spot without losing it.’

Kelly, 22 and Amy, 23 (hot-hatch Peugeot):

‘We both love cars and are quite mechanically minded. So rather than spend our cash on drink, CDs and clothes, we’d rather save up for a new interior, dash, rims or whatever. There’s a better atmosphere at a cruise than in any nightclub so we go to most of the cruises in the South. A lot of girls cruise around with their tits out but I don’t. I’ve got to keep my seatbelt on.’

Brad, 24 (flash Mazda van):

‘People come here for different reasons. I'm not interested in burning my tyres or racing – I prefer the cars to cruise slowly so you can see what’s on them. I’m here to show off my car. It’s a Mazda pick-up B2000 I’ve been working on for the last eight months. There's a telly in the front, fish tanks in the doors and 15 miles of cable in the bloody thing. It’s worth about £13,000 but I'm not selling it. Not until I get something else to pose in anyway.’
