Steve, 23, studied Sociology & Psychology
John said Steve's strengths lay in self-awareness,
time management and the fact that he had a wide
range of work experience. His biggest problem, John
reckoned, was that Steve hadn't quite got round
to finishing his degree and that he should definitely
do this especially if he wanted to pursue
a career in social work. However, he also said that
sports-related youth work, unqualified social work
(like residential care) or communications/ admin
were possibilities without a degree.
How right was he, Steve?
Pretty spot on. He summed up my work experience
and skills well, and my interests except
my love of film and cinema. He was also right about
my problem areas, but didn't mention about my debts,
which are actually probably my biggest worry right
now. I would like to return to college to do some
kind of social-work course but I don't think I will
finish my degree I can't afford to, basically.

studies.] The sports-related youth work was spot-on;
I'd love to do some football coaching I'll
have to organise my spare time better. [Er, less
nights at the pub, Steve?]
If I added anything it'd be that I'd also like to do further study in media/film which my degree course touched upon. I also want to travel I'm saving up to go to Oz next year in June/July [watch this space to hear how he gets on] Fancy going away?
Rhys, 23, graduated
in American Studies
John said that Rhys gave
off a very positive message and had some good
experience in event hire, retail, warehouse international
study. He identified Rhys' areas of interest as
being IT, web design, journalism, music and sport;
he thought Rhys should pursue the web thing
and maybe go into exhibition and/or sales work
or the service sector as he's good at the communication
thang. For this he needs to gain more experience
in the customer service sphere. But he reckons
Rhys should identify and present his strengths
and present his skills better: is he techie or
people person?
Rhys' reaction:
Well he was right about my positive message and
experience thanks! The only thing he missed
was the office skills I learnt at Tarmac, where
I'm working now. He's accurate about the web design
I'm doing a course in it at the moment
and I've just bought a domain name to start a
website [look out for a feature on that very subject
soon at a Careers channel near you]. I've also
just written a piece for a local mag I
really want to get into journalism.
The only thing I'd add to my areas of interest is TV I'd like to work behind the scenes in some way. He's also right that I need to decide where I'm at, I'm going to find something to concentrate on, and present my skills better on my CV [watch this space for some expert help on this]. I also need to organise my time better [the call of the pub again, eh Rhys?]
I've got to say he was wrong about the sales and service sector I'm not interested in that. One other thing I'd like to add is travel writing I'd particularly like to get into travel journalism. Maybe I could start if I go to Oz with Steve next year I'm hoping to go, it's just a case of getting the money together. Interested in how you become a travel writer? Click here
