Human Traffic meets Get Carter in this so-so Britflick that can't compete with either of its influences. As a movie about clubbing, it doesn't have Human Traffic's ferocious energy or wit. And as a violent thriller, it's nowhere near as cool as Get Carter. Ultimately, it just feels tired and dated and oh-so pre-millennium.
Thankfully
Matthew
Rhys and Sienna Guillory
make an attractive, highly watchable couple. Rhys
(the hot young thing from TV's Metropolis)
oozes star quality as a Scunthorpe lad who heads
off to London to investigate his brother's drug-related
death. She, predictably enough, is the girl he
falls for, and together they find themselves drawn
into the seedier narcotics underworld.
It's not a particularly inventive plot, but first-time director Alex Jovy stages the early scenes with visual aplomb, despite what is clearly a low budget. But the film really falls apart when Tim Curry turns up as a drug baron. His performance is so hammy and over-the-top it's like he's doing the whole thing on speed.
Imagine a pantomime baddie with a licence to swear and you'll get the idea. It's good fun seeing Jason Donovan cameoing as one of his sidekicks, though.
If it wasn't for Rhys' wall-to-wall star quality and some pumping music , Sorted wouldn't be worth your time. And it isn't worth getting off your arse to go and see, either. Wait for the video. Better yet, rent Human Traffic instead.
