Fancy wallowing in Christmassy sentiment and general all-round feel-good wonderfulness? Then watch It's A Wonderful Life on telly on Christmas Eve. Can't wait till then? Then go see The Family Man.
So it's only half as good as the amazing It's
A Wonderful Life
, but this festive Nicolas Cage vehicle still flicks the funny bone and teases
the tearducts.
Giving one of his famously laidback performances, Cage plays a Wall Street whizz kid who nods off on Christmas Eve and wakes up the next morning in some kind of alternative reality. Instead of a suited-and-booted bachelor, he's the family man he would have become had he chosen to marry his college sweetheart.
He's now got a wife and two kids, but which existence will he eventually choose? It sounds soppier than it is, at least until the syrupy conclusion. Mostly, The Family Man is smart entertainment that elegantly combines comedy and romance against a warm yuletide backdrop.
Nic makes a likeable leading man, Tea Leoni (Mrs David Duchovny in real life) is easy on the eyes, and even the kids don't get on your nerves.
It's all a bit too throwaway to become a December classic, so don't expect The Family Man to crop up after the Queen's Speech in 20 years time. (She might be far too dead to speak by then anyway.) But it's a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours in between pressie shopping.
