One of the creepiest things
about last year's Blair Witch Project was
how it created its own myth, with a documentary
style that made it hard to shake off the idea that
it was just another movie.
And this sequel sounds like
a good idea, since it perpetuates the same myth
by sending five Blair Witch fans into
the woods for a spot of sightseeing. All very clever
and post-modern and just as scary, right? Wrong.
What sounds potentially shit-your-pants-frightening
on paper turns out to be wet-yourself-hilarious
on film.
Joe
Berlinger, the director starts it well with
a montage in which the Burkitsville folk rabbit
on about how pissed off they are at the invasion
of tourists since the first film came out. But as
soon as tour guide Donovan leads his motley crew
into the legendary forest it feels more like a badly
acted teen movie than another slice of cinema verité.
They all fall asleep, wake up and realise that something
nasty happened during their slumber: their violent
flashbacks are pretty unnerving for a while. But
the plot's like a snarling beast that circles the
audience but refuses to attack and the open ending
has no bite.
The original's open ending
was what made it so scary because you left the cinema
putting it all together in your head. But when you
leave the cinema after Book Of Shadows (the
title of which, by the way, means nothing) you're
more likely to be scratching your head.
Donovan sums the film up quite nicely when, as the
plot twists start to spiral out of control, he yells,
'This makes no sense'. Indeed.
